LEL was contracted to conduct a Phase I EAs at a former commercial property along old Route 66, Springfield, Missouri. The assessment revealed the property was formerly utilized as a truck stop, service station and truck repair facility with several large petroleum above ground storage tanks (ASTs). A Phase II Subsurface Investigation and subsequent Site Characterization revealed soil and groundwater contamination at several locations on the property. In November of 2000, LEL excavated and properly disposed of 2,206 tons of petroleum contaminated soil from the site. Approximately 85,000 gallons of contaminated groundwater was also removed and disposed during the excavation to assist in groundwater remediation. Two ten-inch diameter extraction wells were placed in the excavations to facilitate future groundwater remediation. LEL anticipates complete site groundwater cleanup within one year.
